Haxhi Ali Cave: Visiting Albania's Largest Sea Cave

On the wild western side of the Karaburun Peninsula, a huge opening breaks the white cliffs just above the waterline. This is Haxhi Ali Cave (Shpella e Haxhi Aliut), the largest sea cave in Albania and one of the most photographed places on the coast near Vlora.

The legend of Haxhi Ali

The cave is named after Haxhi Ali Ulqinaku, a legendary sea captain from Ulcinj who fought at sea against the fleets of foreign powers. According to local legend, he hid his ships, and perhaps his treasure, inside this cave, out of sight of his enemies. Whether or not the stories are true, once you see how the cave disappears into the cliff you understand why it made the perfect hideout.

What the cave looks like

The entrance is tall enough for small boats to slip inside. Light reflects off the water and turns the inside of the cave a glowing blue-green, especially around midday. The walls are smooth limestone carved by the sea over thousands of years. Look up to spot the birds that nest in the rock.

How to visit Haxhi Ali Cave

The cave can only be reached by sea. On our full-day tour from Vlora port:

1. Our big 3-deck boat stops in front of the cave for a panoramic visit and photos.
2. If you want to go inside, you can book the optional small speedboat ride on board, paid in cash. The small boat takes you right into the cave.

Big boats cannot enter, so the speedboat is the only way to see the inside. It is a short ride but it is the moment many guests remember most.

Good to know: On windy days the western side of Karaburun can be rough. The captain may decide to skip the cave for safety and stay on the calmer side of the bay.

Tips for the best photos

• Midday light gives the most intense blue inside the cave.
• Use a waterproof phone case. Spray is normal on the small boat.
• Shoot from the upper deck of the big boat to fit the whole cliff and cave entrance in one frame.
